A couple of months ago I was looking for a movie to watch on TV and decided to check the Free On-Demand offerings that appear on Channel 508.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when Casablanca popped up. And then I said to myself, “You’ve seen this movie at least ten times – why bother?”

In early October I was skimming through my favorite rag sheet, the New York Post when I spotted a paragraph that really caught my eye. It said, “China Machado [pronounced Cheena] – the first non-Caucasian model to appear on the cover of a major American fashion magazine (Harper’s Bazaar in 1959) has loaned 75 pieces from her collection for an exhibit titled Inspiration: A Muse Among Friends: The Personal Collection of China Machado that is opening on October 3rd at the National Arts Club.”

Like many people, I grew up with a traditional Christmas: a decorated tree in the living room (with strings of lights that didn’t work until one fiddled with them), stockings on the fireplace filled to the brim on Christmas morning and the traditional turkey dinner. With four children my mother started her Xmas shopping early and made a point of hiding everything. Every year we snooped and every year we failed. Mothers love to outsmart their kids!
