Every red-blooded American woman needs a Girls’ Night Out at least once a month. Guys have known this for years, only they call it “grabbing a beer”. It all comes down to a night out with one’s buddies.
For this event, go for something out of your comfort zone. The following spots are in Manhattan, but you get my drift.
A GREAT HISTORICAL SPOT The Algonquin Hotel located at 59 West 44th (between Fifth and Sixth) has a cocktail lounge, with Edwardian furniture, that retains the long ago charm associated with this landmark. It has comfy seating that is just right for long chats (we were there for two hours). Along with our white wine we ordered “Homemade Algonquin Potato Chips with an old fashioned dip” that tasted like no chip or dip we’ve ever tasted.

230 FIFTH AVENUE, A ROOFTOP New York’s largest outdoor rooftop garden and a fully enclosed penthouse lounge consists of two floors. The rooftop area is huge and features oversize umbrellas for rainy or sunny days. In cooler months, it is partially heated. On our visit, every seat was taken outdoors and the noise level was pretty high – which only added to the fun.

ANGEL’S SHARE, A SPEAKEASY This is a relatively new discovery. It was recently described by a patron as “the gold standard of all the speakeasy-type bars in New York”. The bar is located inside Village Yokocho, a Japanese restaurant at 8 Stuyvesant Street.

One goes up the stairs to the restaurant, enters and goes through an unmarked door on the left. The drinks are truly exotic. We sampled Smoke in Your Eyes (bourbon and sherry in a “smoking” glass and a delicious El Bromista with two appetizers: fried oysters and vegetable skewers (onions, green and red peppers, asparagus and shiitake mushrooms).
WHAT’S WITH THE NAME? During the distillation process, wine and other spirits evaporate at a rate of approximately 2% per annum. This lost portion is often said to have gone to the angels. Hence the name: the Angel’s Share. The speakeasy is quite small in size. Groups of no more than four people are allowed. There is also no standing while drinking.
MAY WE SUGGEST…
Any of Adea’s tops are perfect for Girls’ Night Out. Team any one of them with a smart pants suit, slacks or a skirt and you’ll feel great.

I just read an article that sounded – to me at least – like “a canary in a coal mine” or an early warning of danger. This piece, written by Joe Pompeo, appeared in the May 2020 issue of Vanity Fair magazine with the title “The British Tabloid Invasion” and a subtitle that read, “How the Daily Mail is conquering American gossip.”

Apparently the good old U.S. is a nation of “not great” sleepers. Really? And I thought I was the only one! According to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention it was revealed that one out of three Americans are chronically sleep-deprived. Yikes!

I think we’re all taken by the incredible mystique of the famous French fashion house, Hermès that has been with us for two centuries and is still owned and operated by the same family. From its beginnings in fine equestrian leather goods, they are – in the tumultuous year 2020 – best known for their handbags and many other items.
My image of Hermès has always been rarified products at equally rarified prices so imagine my surprise when I recently received a very stylish publication of theirs in the mail.
