As a personal shopper and stylist, there are certain style mantras that I find myself repeating over and over. My #1 style mantra is to recommend that my clients select open necklines in order to elongate their figures and create a vertical sightline.
A scoop-neck, v-neck and even a draped cowl-neck draws the viewer’s eyes up and down the body. In contrast, crew-neck and boat-neck tops lead the viewer’s eyes from left to right.
Open necklines are especially important for petite clients, clients with large busts and clients with broad shoulders. Although it is a seemingly simple choice and subtle change, it can truly work wonders. Torsos (and entire bodies) all of a sudden look longer and leaner, distracting chests are diminished and shoulders are narrowed. Combine this with a highlighted waist (style mantra #2) and a lean silhouette throughout (style mantra #3) and a client can appear to shed multiple pounds and grow multiple inches in seconds.

I just read an article that sounded – to me at least – like “a canary in a coal mine” or an early warning of danger. This piece, written by Joe Pompeo, appeared in the May 2020 issue of Vanity Fair magazine with the title “The British Tabloid Invasion” and a subtitle that read, “How the Daily Mail is conquering American gossip.”
